The Light Under it All
"It's So Easy to Love You": a song for dads, their kids, and the child inside.
Today’s the day. Thanks for following along, everyone. It’s a special thing to share your art with an audience. This is the moment when all the fragments are gathered up and the circle is made complete.
“If I recall the light under it all, shadows will fade.”
Tomorrow begins Father’s Day weekend, and my heart is so full. I’ve never cried more working on music and (strange to say) marketing materials.
I’m thinking a lot about my son, Robert, who beams with bright light.
I’m thinking about the baby Amy and I are expecting this fall (inshallah).
I’m thinking about my parents, who were such faithful shepherds of my younger years, and loved me with so nurturing and selfless a love.
And I’m thinking too of myself when I was younger—that fresh-faced, witless kid who wanted so badly to taste the world and find out what else is true.
In fact, it’s that little Matt who’s pictured in the album art. Working on this song has been an opportunity to reach back to that kid and let him know how much I love and appreciate him too. Since, you know: “The child is the father of the man.”
So: send this song to your dad. Send it to your kid.
Or just put it on, close your eyes, and remember the time when you were small and precious and full of light.
You still are.
If you would like to purchase the song:
On Bandcamp, I’ve prepared a special “deluxe edition” of the single. It includes two more tracks, which won’t be available on streaming platforms:
a second new song about my son Robert and about his new baby sister or brother (this song will also be appearing in the 4-track series later this month)
an early, raw acoustic performance of “It’s So Easy to Love You” which shows another side of the song and lets listeners in on some of the creative process.
A Father’s Day Concert and BBQ
A quick reminder for all of you living in the Halifax area:
On Father’s Day, June 15, We’ll be making music and grilling burgers at St. George’s Round Church starting at 3:30pm, Atlantic time. I’ll be playing “It’s So Easy to Love You” with a small band, and then we’re putting down picnic blankets, catching some rays, and enjoying Nevin Cussen’s famous fresh-fried potato chips.
